We are delighted to welcome author Morten Høi Jensen and culture journalist Christina Cacouris for a conversation about Jensen's new book, The Master of Contradictions, about Thomas Mann's celebrated 1924 novel The Magic Mountain and why it is still so resonant today.

Jensen and Cacouris will discuss how Mann's writing of the novel, which began in 1913 and ended in 1924, coincided with the devastating years of the First World War and the tumultuous birth of the German Weimar Republic. A cultural conservative when he began writing The Magic Mountain , Mann had become an unlikely defender of democracy by the time he finished it.
