In Philosophy Circles, we share our thoughts, experience a sense of community, and discover perspectives that differ from our own. Philosophy Circles are a facilitated, sit-in-a-circle session of sharing ideas on the specific subject matter presented that day. It addresses universal human themes—such as ethics, logic, epistemology, aesthetics, and concepts of language—that we revisit throughout our lives, shaping our experiences and our understanding of the world. Respect—both for one’s own presence and for listening to and respecting others—is the fundamental principle underlying the structure and mindset of the Philosophy Circle. No previous knowledge needed, only your common sense and wonderment! The act of going into depth with one idea, with a group, for the couple of hours, turns out to be very enriching, in this day and age of fast culture.
Details: Workshop fee, covers all three sessions, no single session sign-up. Group size: 10-16
Duration: 18.30-21.00
Class Sessions:
1. January 13th, 6:30-9:00 pm FRIENDSHIP, the Greek PHILIA
What does this word mean to us? When we think about it, feel it, say it out loud, when does it apply and when does it not, or maybe we will find a whole different meaning to the term friendship. Through thinking modes; caring thinking -active listening, and collaborative thinking -building on each others ideas we create a philosophical circle of enquiry, tossing and turning the term Friendship.
2. January 19th, 6:30-9:00 pm ART, CAN ANYTHING BE ART?
By forming our own questions and reflecting through writing, drawing examples and philosphizing, we will dig deeper into this subject.
Thoughout history, we have been told what art is and what it isn´t, and at times that everything can be art. We will apply critical thinking in our session, and understand the difference between critical thinking and critical feeling.
3. January 26th, 6:30 - 9:00 pm FAIRNESS, WHAT DOES THAT WORD MEAN?
This term has many variations and is subject to daily decisions in many matters of society. Is there an absolut fairness? Do we make up fairness to fit our own likings? We will focus on creating, categorizing and choosing questions to work with. Creative thinking will be introduced in this session.

About Julie Wolsk Bentzon:
During a 7 year period Julie studied periodically with all the training courses, at the London based SAPERE (now Thoughtful), training in philosophy for children (p4c). It is through this system that Julie bases her present day philosophy work with adults and children, and at present is doing longer workshops with teacher training facilitating philosophy circles at Bernadotte school. During her 25 years of teaching at Bernadotte school, she worked since 2017 with all age groups doing philosophy circles and found it heartfelt and interesting how easy it is for people to work with a philosophical viewpoint on all matters that are not factual. Facilitating these group dialogs is an experience of bringing people closer together through shared discussion and experiencing amazing new angles on common matters. At the same time she studied philosophy at Copenhagen University’s bachelor program.
Julie is an American born artist and philosopher. Based in Copenhagen since age 11 with a life circling around art, philosophy, music and education. She studied old european painting techniques with Peter Thorlin at Atelier 12. She studied at the Copenhagen Royal Art Academy in the late 70´s with professor Willy Ørskov, taught old painting techniques at Atelier 12 and Lollands Kunsthøjskole and had her own studio on Nørrebro working with sculpture and painting. Moving on to Modern Dance and being part of the grassroots movement in Denmark, she was the co-founder with composer husband Aske Bentzon, and part of the art group Fællesatelieret on Finsensvej, a mixed artist community, including painters, dancers and musicians. She moved to New York in the 80´s to take a formal dance education at both Martha Graham and Merce Cunninghams studios, along with studying Dance Notation, which took her to Japan to document priestesses ritual movements on Okinawa. Back in Cph she started a 2 year dance program; School of Movement on Nørrebro, a dance Company; Julie Bentzon Dance Company and was in the co-founding group for The Free Choreographers. Teaching and touring, she changed paths again and worked for 25 years at Bernadotteschool within different subjects. Her love for always asking questions and experimenting with trying to think and do in new ways, took her around a Proffessional Bachelor’s Degree in Leadership. Julie shares her time between doing art in her studio on Østerbro, exhibiting, and working with philosophy at different venues. Partaking in philosophy workshops in the US led by Mark Linsenmayer, from The Partially Examined Life, and on-line international meets between European philosophy for children organizations and individuals. She has been a board member at both Bernadotteschool and Dansescenen.
