Founded in Washington DC in 2019, Liberties is an independent quarterly journal of ideas that publishes serious, stylish, and controversial essays about significant issues in culture and politics. Liberties features essays from leading scholars, award-winning and well-known nonfiction and fiction writers, next generation rising talents, and poets from around the worlds. Its contributors have included Mario Vargas Llosa, John Banville, Pascal Bruckner, Roberto Calasso, Oksana Forostyna, Mary Gaitskill, Durs Grünbein, Martha Nussbaum, Cass Sunstein, Maria Stepanova, and Adam Zagajewski.
The talk
Editor Leon Wieseltier, executive editor Celeste Marcus, and European liaison, Morten Høi Jensen will discuss the importance of the humanities in the age of AI, the decline of the alliance between the United States and Europe, and the possibility of liberal humanism in a reactionary age.
About the speakers
Leon Wieseltier was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1952 into an Orthodox Jewish family of Holocaust survivors. He was educated at Columbia University, Balliol College, Oxford, and Harvard University, where he was a member of the Society of Fellows. For thirty-four years he was the literary editor of The New Republic. His essays on culture, politics, religion, and philosophy have been published in many languages. He is the author of Kaddish, as well as Nuclear War, Nuclear Peace and Against Identity. He has translated many Hebrew poems, particularly by Bialik and Amichai, into English, and contributed many essays on art for exhibition catalogs. In 2019 he founded Liberties: A journal of Culture and Politics, a serious journal of ideas, where he is honored to serve as editor, He is the recipient of the Dan David Prize.
Celeste Marcus is the executive editor of Liberties Journal and the author of Chaim Soutine: Genius, Obsession, and a Dramatic Life in Art. Her writings have appeared in publications such as Liberties Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The New York Review of Books. She cohosts the podcast Protective Presence USA, a podcast which discusses settler terrorism against Palestinians in the West Bank and the activism that attempts to stem it.
Morten Høi Jensen is the European Liaison of Liberties Journal and the author of A Difficult Death: The Life and Work of Jens Peter Jacobsen and, most recently, The Master of Contradictions: Thomas Mann and the Making of The Magic Mountain. His essays and reviews have appeared in Liberties Journal, The New York Review of Books, The Literary Review, and Commonweal. In 2026, he served as a consulting editor to Granta 175: Scandinavia.
